Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Set in the heart of the Sonoma Valley north of San Francisco, the Beltane Ranch is a family-run working farm producing wine, grass-fed beef and olive oil. Built in 1892, the romantic verandah-wrapped shingle house is one of the area's most charming places to stay. There are five airy guestrooms decorated with antiques and heirlooms and a cottage looking out over gardens of organic vegetables, flowers and orchards. The property, which grows chardonnay, zinfandel, syrah and cabernet sauvignon grapes, produced its first vintage in 2009. It's also well placed for exploring the wineries of the 17-mile long Valley of the Moon.

North Fork Table & Inn, Long Island, New York
Occupying the northern prong of Long Island is the aptly named North Fork. Despite being a neighbour of the ritzy Hamptons, this area is known for bucolic scenery and a vibrant foodie scene. The state itself is the second-largest wine-producer in the US (after California). The North Fork Table & Inn is a stand-out place to stay, due in part to its restaurant's status as a gourmet hotspot. All the ingredients are locally sourced and seafood is landed from nearby Peconic Bay.

The 1804 Inn, Barboursville, Virginia
This unique inn is the home of Italian winemakers Gianni and Silvana Zonin, who established the Barboursville Vineyard in the heart of Virginia's wine country in 1976. Their Georgian villa sits alongside the original, historic mansion, ravaged by fire in 1884. Set overlooking the estate's vineyards, there are three suites in the main house and three cottages. Guests can visit the winery, dine at the estate's restaurant and explore beyond its gates.

Allison Inn & Spa, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Oregon is perhaps best known for its pinot noirs. You can sample many of these by the glass at the 85-room Allison Inn & Spa restaurant in the heart of the wine-producing Willamette Valley. It opened three years ago and is owned by a long-standing local family. Set on a gently sloping hillside, there are views of Parrett Mountain beyond, the Dundee Hills and the hotel's pinot noir vineyards. Fittingly, the adjoining spa offers grape-derived "pinotherapy" treatments.

Geneva on the Lake, Finger Lakes, New York
The grandiose Geneva on the Lake was inspired by the Villa Lancellotti in Frascati near Rome and is now on the National Register of Historic Buildings. It has commanding views of Seneca Lake in the heart of the wine-producing Finger Lakes region close to the Canadian border. The 29 suites are unashamedly old school, with chintzy fabrics, antique-style furniture and many feature four-poster beds. The Seneca Lake Wine Trail is within easy reach.
