Turkey may be too hot for riding in the summer, but in September and October you can ride pleasantly through the wine districts with J & C Voyageurs (01235-848747) for a week for about pounds 835 including accommodation - or you can ask for your own tailor-made tour.
Much further east, Steppes East (01285 810267) offers trail rides in Mongolia as part of longer tours: the Reindeer Herders of Hovsgal (27 July-14 August) costs pounds 2,370, whereas Riding with Eagles (14-28 August) costs pounds 2,270.
If you want to indulge your Western fantasies, American Round-up (01404 881777) can help you with an eight-day (six days' riding) Pony Express tour in Wyoming, for pounds 880 excluding flights. They also have trail rides in Arizona, Utah, California, South Dakota and Vermont, with prices starting from pounds 475.
Journey Latin America (0181-747 8315) can arrange eight-day (seven nights) rides in the Andes near the Chilean border in western Argentina, for pounds 856 all-inclusive with catered camping. The ultimate in luxury equestrianism could be the 10-day riding safari in Kenya, with accompanying mobile support camp of the most pampering sort, for pounds 4,500, organised through Cazenove and Loyd Safaris (0181-875 9666).
