Obertauern: family-friendly slopes in Austria's snowiest winter sports destination
Superb, instantly accessible skiing, stunning Alpine scenery and vibrant nightlife make Obertauern a sure-fire winner this ski season
A long ski season, the deepest snow in Austria, hotels right on the pistes and family-friendly options – they all add up to make Obertauern one of the most appealing ski resorts in SalzburgerLand. From November to May, ultra-modern ski lifts let you zoom across 100km of pistes in a natural snow bowl. As Obertauern is only about an hour’s drive from Salzburg airport, you’ll have more time to spend on the slopes and enjoy magnificent views of the Salzburger Alps.
Mountain magic
Get to know the perfectly groomed slopes of Obertauern by skiing the Tauern Round circuit. Thanks to the 26 lifts that connect 100km of pistes, you can finish where you started. If you’re really keen to get on the mountain first, make fresh tracks from 8.30am every Wednesday when the lifts at Gamsleitenbahn I, Zehnerkarbahn and Achenrainbahn open early.
Skiers and snowboarders who can’t get enough skiing through the course of the day can head to the Edelweissbahn chairlift on Mondays and Thursdays for magical night skiing on the floodlit slope. Expert skiers aren’t left out either – not with one of the steepest mogul runs in Europe on Gamsleiten 2. And freeriders have some fabulous terrain to tackle, as well as the Spot snowpark.
Beatles fans make a pilgrimage to the resort to see where the band filmed scenes from their movie Help! Check out the statues of John, Paul, George and Ringo that were created at Kirchbühellift to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the film, and have a go at playing the Beatles piano at Grünwaldkopfbahn.
Family-friendly slopes
Everything is made easy for families at Obertauern. Start with a hotel that’s right on the slopes for ski-in-ski-out convenience. Ski schools will soon turn your children into keen skiers, and they’ll love the fun of the Bibo Bear family ski park. This winter, there’s even more to discover, with the new Bobby’s Monsterpark ski area just for children
If you fancy a chance of scenery – or gear – try out some of the activities including snowkiting and riding a fat bike. Bomb down the mountain on a toboggan, or step into a pair of snowshoes for an invigorating hike. There’s always a mountain hut nearby for scenic lunches, but save your energy for après-ski time when the bars and clubs of Obertauern pick up the pace. To slow things down, take a leisurely ride through the village in a horse-drawn carriage for a breathtakingly magical experience.
