Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Vietnam's prime minister has given the go-ahead for the construction of a mega airport near the country's business hub of Ho Chi Minh City, the government's official website said Thursday.
"The construction of the airport... will create a network to connect air transportation for the whole region," the site said, announcing premier Nguyen Tan Dung's approval in principle for the project.
Earlier media reports said building the Long Thanh airport, about 50 kilometres (35 miles) from downtown, could cost up to 10 billion dollars, although the government did not give the scale of investment.
According to an earlier report in Ho Chi Minh City's Phap Luat (Law) newspaper, the airport could annually handle 52 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo by 2035.
This would help ease overcrowding at southern Tan Son Nhat airport, currently the country's largest, which accommodates 12 million passengers and 278,000 tonnes of cargo per year.
