From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

While the president and first lady will be staying at the US Ambassador’s official residence in Regent’s Park, Winfield House, the rest of the Trump clan – including Donald Jr, Ivanka, Eric and Tiffany – are expected to check in to the Corinthia, reports the Daily Mail.
These opulent digs in Westminster often play host to the rich and famous, with the most decadent suite, the Royal Penthouse, costing a gag-worthy £24,000 a night.
For that, guests get two en-suite bedrooms, a private spa, roof terrace with views of St Paul’s and the London Eye, lounge, living room, dining room and study split over two floors and linked by a black-marble spiral staircase. The kitchen is also stocked with goods from Harrods.
It’s not known whether the Trump children and their partners will be staying in the Royal Penthouse or one of the hotel’s alternative luxury penthouse suites.
There are six others in total, ranging from the book-covered Writer’s Penthouse to the Whitehall Penthouse, accessed by a private internal lift and “designed for guests who habitually wield power and influence... particularly those in the habit of making decisions amid restrained, reserved grandeur.”
The lavish hotel was featured in the 2018 BBC1 documentary A Hotel For The Super-Rich And Famous and past guests include Mariah Carey, James Corden and Cuba Gooding Jr.
Even the cheapest rooms start at more than £600 a night.
Outside of the suites themselves, the Corinthia offers an indoor pool and spa and fine dining courtesy of Kerridge’s Bar & Grill, Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge’s first London restaurant.
A spokesperson from Corinthia Hotel London said they do not comment on guest bookings.
The president’s visit has not been without controversy so far.
Donald Trump waded into a fight before he had even descended the steps from Air Force One to begin his UK state visit on Monday. In a tweet he called Sadiq Khan, the London mayor, “terrible” and a “stone-cold loser” – prompting Mr Khan to call him “childish” and a “far-right” threat in return.
Protests against his visit are expected to bring central London to a standstill on Tuesday.
