Q On a recent flight between Christchurch and Rotorua in New Zealand we got our boarding cards and luggage labels from a machine. We placed our luggage on the belt and later walked directly onto the aircraft without any personal or baggage screening or ID check. I found this astonishing. Do terrorists not bother with internal flights?

A I've had the same experience in New Zealand (Christchurch-Queenstown) and also on domestic flights in the Orkney Islands. Personally I don't have a problem with the concept of light-touch security - I imagine someone is keeping an eye on the manifest and passengers, and that sometimes more attention is paid. Some aviation security professionals believe having a more random approach to airport screening would be a positive move.
