Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Since The Independent and Wanderlust launched the 19th annual Travel Photo of the Year competition in July we've been astonished by the quality of the entries so far submitted. However, there is still time for both amateur and professional photographers to enter their best shots for a chance to win some outstanding prizes.

The winning photos, plus a selection of shortlisted shots, will be printed in The Independent and Wanderlust, as well as being showcased in a stunning exhibition at Destinations 2014, the UK's top holiday and travel show. Entering the competition is simple. There are two categories: Amateur (open to amateurs only) and Portfolio (open to both amateur and professional photographers).

WIN A TRIP TO JORDAN

Amateur category: This fascinating kingdom is extremely diverse; from the fertile Jordan Valley to remote desert canyons, you can explore haunting wilderness as readily as lively cities. The four winners of the Amateur category (plus a companion each) will be sent on an incredible photographic commission to this exciting destination, courtesy of the Jordan Tourism Board (uk.visitjordan.com). Photos entered in the Amateur category can be taken anywhere in the world, but must fit one of four categories: People, Wildlife, Landscape or Travel Icons. The Travel Icons category is designed to recognise shots of places, events or people that have achieved an iconic visual status in the world of travel.

WIN £3,000

Portfolio category: The Portfolio category is open both to amateur and professional photographers, with a top prize of £3,000. Entrants need to assemble a set of five eye-catching images, which together present an inspiring and unique insight into one of the four categories (People, Wildlife, Landscapes, Travel Icons). The top prize will be awarded to the best portfolio for telling a cohesive and spectacular story.

Runners-up prizes: All runners-up and highly recommended entrants will win amazing Nikon cameras. The runners-up can get new perspectives with the Nikon D5200 digital SLR camera kit – a lightweight model packed with creative effects, a vari-angle screen, 24.1mp DX-format CMOS sensor and full HD movie mode. Meanwhile, our highly recommended entrants will become proud owners of the Nikon Coolpix AW110. For more info, see nikon.co.uk.

For more details, including full terms and conditions, see travelphotooftheyear.co.uk or the September issue of 'Wanderlust', on sale now (price £3.99). The closing date for entries is 17 October 2013.
