Visitors will be offered hot, pepper-covered fruits, as was traditional during Roman new year festivities. Meanwhile, guests will be waking up at the new Las Piedras Fasano hotel in Uruguay, the Fasano group's first foray outside Brazil. This week: Tallinn gets into the swing of being joint capital of culture with Turku in Finland. The Estonian capital claims to have a special event every day this year – this week sees a documentary festival, a Noah's Ark of wooden animals from all over the world, a winter swimming festival and a graphic art triennial (tallinn2011.ee). On Monday, the dramatic new Leonardo Royal Hotel opens in Munich, bringing a touch of Bauhaus to the Bavarian capital (leonardo-hotels.com).
In the diary: Book into the Hotel La Belle Juliette in Paris. Opening on the Left Bank on 15 January, the elegant townhouse has been enhanced inside with shades of slate and navy and splashes of ochre pastel blue. A breakfast room/bar is inspired by the 19th-century literary salons that typified this part of Paris, while a small spa completes the indulgent package (hotel-belle-juliette-paris.com). Alternatively, if you seek winter sun, Rosewood resorts is opening a hotel in the artists' village of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico at the end of the month. The colonial town was deemed a Unesco World Heritage Site for its range of historic architecture, cobbled lanes and colourful buildings (rosewoodsanmiguel.com).
