Wild isle

San Diego's Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa has just come to the end of a $30m transformation, which includes the opening of a restaurant, resplendent with an original Damien Hirst butterfly artwork and 49 refurbished Mediterranean-style guest casitas (ranchovalencia.com).

Capital gains

The Croatian capital Zagreb has a new B&B. Studios Kairos offers four rooms, each hinting at the city's history. They include the Writer's Room, with books, a vintage typewriter and a quill motif painted on the wall. B&B from 440 kuna (£48) (studio-kairos.com).
