Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Walk the line

The Hay on Wye walking festival strides forth from this Thursday (until 15 October), with more than 50 guided walks snaking through spectacular scenery, from the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains (pictured) to Offa's Dyke and the Wye Valley. There are also evening events that include a ceilidh with folk music and dancing at the Swan at Hay Hotel and there's a pub quiz at Kilvert's. Walks and events range from £5 to £12 (haywalking.org).

East Africa express

Mombasa in Kenya and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania become more accessible from 4 December when Turkish Airlines starts flights from its Istanbul hub (turkishairlines.com).

Oink, Oink ...

Healing time at Harrods

Maradiva Villas Resort in Mauritius is bringing its award-winning Ayurvedic spa treatments to the Urban Retreat salon at Harrods in London for a month-long pop-up from Monday to 5 Nov. Treatments include a 60-minute Indian-oil massage for £85 (urbanretreat.co.uk).

Sail on in luxury

Alila Hotels has a luxury take on the phinisi two-masted Indonesian ships. Alila Purnama sleeps 10 and first departs Raja Ampat, West Papua Province, on 10 December (alilahotels.com).

Ecuador alarm

After last weekend's kidnap (then release) of two women near Ecuador's border with Colombia, the FO says northern Carchi province (except Tulcan) and San Lorenzo are "particularly dangerous" (fco.gov.uk/travel).

Check in to the Hotel GB

Gordon Ramsay, Mary Portas and a team of celebs have been dressing up London's Bermondsey Square Hotel as Hotel GB on C4. It resumes a normal service next weekend. Doubles £107 (bermondseysquarehotel.co.uk).
