Today: The Peace Bridge opens in Derry (derryvisitor.com). York Art Gallery's exhibition celebrating local hero William Etty opens (yorkartgallery.org.uk). And the summer Food Festival in the Cornish village of Stoke Climsland begins (cornwallfoodanddrink.co.uk).

This week: On Friday, the Historic Dockyard Chatham hosts "Titanic Honour & Glory" in No 1 Smithery, to 30 September. The exhibition includes passengers' letters, the ship's silverware and some of the crew's possessions (thedockyard.co.uk)

Also on Friday, the first guests will check in at the Nolitan hotel in New York, adding to the city's luxury hotel scene (nolitanhotel.com).

In the diary: Vietnam Airlines launches the first direct links between the UK and Vietnam this winter. Non-stop flights from Gatwick to Hanoi launch on 9 December, with Ho Chi Minh City, available from the following day (vietnamair.co.uk). From Heathrow, BMI launches a new route to the holy Indian city of Amritsar via Almaty in Kazakhstan, starting on 13 October (flybmi.com).
