The world's largest consumer winter sports event, the Ski & Snowboard Show, runs from 20 to 24 October at Olympia in London and aims to recreate "the mountain atmosphere". And for added gastro glamour, on Friday 22 October, the Michelin-starred chef Heston Blumenthal, left, will be at the show to judge the Three Valleys cook-off competition, which focuses on regional ingredients ( metrosnow.co.uk).

The second annual Doha Tribeca Film Festival runs from 26 - 30 October, and includes open-air screenings and showcases of 40 films from the Arab world and beyond ( dohafilminstitute.com/filmfestival/).

Helsinki is a new route for no-frills airline Norwegian. Flights from Gatwick are on sale now for departures from May 2011 ( norwegian.com).
