Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Today: In China, The Harbin Ice Festival is under way in the capital of Heilongjiang province. The annual winter event sees artists and engineers chisel elaborate sculptures, towers and temples from the frozen waters of the Songhua River. The event continues until the end of February (cnto.org).

This week: The Active Travel Show starts at ExCeL in London on Thursday until 15 January, alongside the Outdoors Show, London Bike Show and Boat Show; day tickets (£16) cover all four (theactivetravelshow.co.uk). In Miami, the third International Art Fair takes place 12-16 January in the city's Downtown area, with painting, photography, sculpture and installations. Day tickets, US$10 (£6.70) (mia-artfair.com).

In the diary: In The Netherlands, Art Rotterdam runs between 8-12 February, with a new twist for this year's festival. Visitors can book into the temporary "Hotel Rotterdam" to spend a night in the homes or studios of one of 24 artists. Doubles with breakfast, €60 (wakeupinart.nl).
