The Brighton Festival begins, this year guest-directed by Anish Kapoor. Highlights include music from Antony and the Johnsons; until 24 May ( brightonfestival.org ). More festivities are to be had at Eat!, Newcastle Gateshead. Quirkier events at this 16-day food festival include a Mad Hatter's Tea Party, which will see a 100m tea table set up across the River Tyne ( newcastlegateshead.com ).

Air Arabia Maroc, a new Moroccan low-cost carrier, inaugurates its first flight, from Casablanca to Stansted on Wednesday ( airarabia.com ). Further north, the Floralies flower show in Nantes celebrates its 10th anniversary on Friday. Held every five years, it brings together top horticulturalists and visitors in their droves ( comite-des-floralies.com ).

The Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art will be at various venues in the city from 24 May until 27 September ( thessalonikibiennale.gr ). And in Western Australia, the Pinctada Cable Beach is a new resort opening later this month in Broome. Its 72 rooms will be complemented by a spa and asymmetric pool ( pinctadacablebeach.com.au ).
