Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The festival

The first Tenerife Rock Coast Festival takes place in the island's capital, Santa Cruz, from 24 to 26 May. Fatboy Slim, Marilyn Manson and Iggy & The Stooges are to appear. There are also ski and snowboard simulators, paintballing, and a wind tunnel that allows you to feel the thrill of skydiving (rockcoastfestival.com).

The warning

Risks in Madagascar are increasing, according to the Foreign Office, due to a "weakening of government authority". The new travel advice warns about risks in the capital, Antananarivo, and beyond: "Muggings and robberies are occurring with increasing frequency, not only in urban areas but in nature reserves and on beaches. Two French nationals were found murdered on a beach in Tuléar in April."

The ascent

Next year is the 60th anniversary of the conquering of Mount Everest by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. To celebrate, World Expeditions is launching a series of Everest treks next May. All five will culminate on 29 May 2013 some 3,800m up at the Thyangboche Monastery, the most important Buddhist site in the Nepalese Himalayas. Prices start at £1,690, excluding flights (worldexpeditions.co.uk).

The effective number of pounds sterling, you'll pay per night, for a hotel in Barbados with one package from British Airways. As the Caribbean gets hotter and more humid, prices are falling. So, BA Holidays is offering a week in Barbados, with room-only at the All Seasons Resort Europa, for £629 per person, based on two travelling together before the end of June. The current air fare alone is £615 return.

The event

Next weekend sees the latest round of after-hours celebrations of arts, history and heritage in the Museums at Night festival. Hundreds of museums and galleries across the UK will stay open late and host special events. The National Portrait Gallery will use its exhibition of works by the artist Lucian Freud, who died last year, as inspiration for an evening of music, poetry, film, life-drawing sessions and talks. Banksy's new sculpture Cardinal Sin will be on view at the Walker Liverpool. Sleepovers are on offer at Ruthin Gaol, Kenilworth Castle and elsewhere (museumsatnight.org.uk).

The exhibition

"Mind the Map: inspiring art, design and cartography", the London Transport Museum's major exhibition for 2012, opens on Friday.

It explores how the need to navigate around the complex public-transport system in London has created enduring works of cartographic art (ltmuseum.co.uk).

The hotel

Ten minutes from Amalfi, 15 minutes from Ravello, 90 minutes from Naples airport – those are the timings to get to the hotel Monastero Santa Rosa, which opens this week on the Amalfi coast in Italy. All 20 rooms in the hotel have sea views, and the grounds tumble down five tiers. The adjoining 12th-century chapel has been preserved, and is available for weddings (monastero santarosa.com).
