Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Double Deutsch

Bristol gets connected with two enticing German cities this year. On 11 February, BMI Regional starts flying from the city's airport to Hamburg (pictured). Then, from 7 April, a link begins to Frankfurt (bmiregional.com).

Hit the sack

New York's "hotel week" sees 26 hotels, such as The Ace, offering set room rates of $100, $200 and $250 for stays until 20 January (njfpr.com/ hotel-week).

Retail therapy

Dubai's annual Shopping Festival is under way, with hundreds of retail outlets across the emirate offering discounts until 3 February. (dubaievents.ae/en/dsf).

Catch a thief

This week, the Norwegian capital opens The Thief. The hotel's name derives from the time when criminals would be brought to justice on Oslo's Thief Island. Today, the land is part of an urban renewal programme (thethief.com).

Event horizon

From 17-20 January, the Outdoors Show and Active Travel Show is at London's ExCeL. Attractions will include an "adventure stage" and an exhibition on the 60th anniversary of the first summit of Everest (theactivetravelshow.co.uk).

The Natural Shape shoes are moulded around the foot to give a comfortable, supportive feel, with breathable lining and contoured soles for added grip. Perfect for implementing that new fitness regime (cotswoldoutdoor.com).

Paradise lost

Following the death of British tourist Stephen Ashton at a New Year's Eve party in Thailand, the FO warns: "Western tourists have been victims of vicious, unprovoked attacks by gangs in Koh Phangan... particularly around Full Moon parties".

Ski Austria

Ski operators have tempting deals this month. Neilson offers an all-inclusive week in Katschberg, staying at the highly rated Cristallo, for £598 from a Manchester departure on 26 January (neilson.co.uk).
