Today Dorset's foremost fossil hunter, Mary Anning, is celebrated in Lyme Regis, in the resort's ArtsFest (lymeregisartsfest.com).

Her 19th-century discoveries on the "Jurassic Coast" transformed scientific thinking, and are celebrated at the town's museum (lymeregismuseum.co.uk). Have a drink at the Royal Lion, pictured.

This week World Tourism Day takes place on Tuesday, In Egypt it is being celebrated with the theme "Tourism – Linking Cultures", with official events and talks in Aswan and home-spun activities around the globe (wtd.unwto.org).

In the diary Ian Schrager has soft-launched his new venture, Public hotels, in Chicago. The mission statement is to offer affordable functionality, style, comfort and service. The hotel will open fully on 11 October, with a Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant, coffee bar and 24-hour minibar (publichotels.com). And easyJet has announced destinations from its new base at London Southend airport next summer. They include Alicante, Faro, Barcelona and Ibiza (easyJet.com).
