Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Today

The first guests are waking up at the new five-star Dom Pedro Laguna on the Aquiraz Riviera near Fortaleza in Brazil (dompedro.com), while in Switzerland The Grand Hotel Park Gstaad is reopening on its 100th birthday after a multimillion euro renovation (grandhotelpark.ch). In Paris, the Shangri-La finally arrives (shangri-la.com).

This week

Another hotel opening this week is the Mint Hotel in London on Monday. The four-star hotel near the Tower of London has rooms that come complete with iMacs and bright functional design, plus a rooftop bar; a City Café will follow in January (minthotel.com). Meanwhile, CityJet is putting on festive flights from London City to Deauville (pictured) in Normandy on Thursday, Friday and then Friday 31 December and Sunday 2 January (weather permitting), in response to the success of the route's seasonal launch this summer. A regular service resumes on 7 January with three flights per week (cityjet.com).

In the diary

Center Parcs in Sherwood Forest has put the finishing touches to its new two-storey treehouses. They sleep eight, and are available to book from the end of the month (differentview.centerparcs.co.uk).
