The "Words by the Water" festival takes place in Keswick from 1-10 March. Speakers include poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, playwright Michael Frayn, pictured, and BBC Radio 4 presenter James Naughtie (theatrebythelake.com).

Animated Exeter celebrates that art form this week from Monday to Saturday. Screenings include the Beatles' Yellow Submarine and there is a free exhibition of old-favourite animations including the BBC's Mr Benn (animatedexeter.co.uk).

The starting price, in sterling, of tickets available for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics through CoSport. Tickets went on sale this week alongside travel packages for the Games, which take place in the Russian ski resort from 7-24 February next year (cosport.com).

Ecuador takes off

Quito's inner-city airport will be replaced on 20 February when a new gateway opens 18km east of the Ecuadorian capital. It doesn't just take over from the old Mariscal Sucre airport – it also keeps the same name (quitoairport.aero).
