11th Biennale de Lyon  (September 15-December 31, Lyon, France)
The 11th Biennale de Lyon showcases the works of 70 artists from 24. The theme of this year's event is "A Terrible Beauty Is Born" and aims to "address a state of confusion in the arts today." The participating artists have been traveling and researching their works in Europe and Africa throughout the past year in preparation for the event.

Melbourne Fringe Festival  (September 21-October 9, Melbourne, Australia)
The Melbourne Fringe Festival is a city-wide celebration of independent creativity that traverses the boundaries of art, cinema, theater, dance, fashion and music. In 2009 more than 560,000 visitors came to the festival to see the works of 4,815 artists at 143 venues across the state.

Willem De Kooning: A Retrospective  (September 18, 2011 - January 9, 2012, MoMA, New York, USA)
New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) presents the first major museum exhibition devoted to the range of artwork by Willem de Kooning, widely considered to be among the most important artists of the 20th century. This survey covers nearly seven decades, beginning with his early academic works, made in Holland before he moved to the United States in 1926, and concluding with his final, sparely abstract paintings of the late 1980s.

Tim Burton  (May 29 - October 31, Los Angeles, USA)
This major retrospective exhibition at the LACMA explores the filmmaker's creative work, bringing together over 700 drawings, paintings, photographs and cinematic ephemera. Many of these objects come from the artist's own archive, as well as from studio archives and private collections of Burton's collaborators.

Returning to the city of its birth for the first time in a decade, Rock in Rio kicks off September 23 and is set to feature more than 200 global artists and Brazilian stars. Including Katy Perry, Jay-Z, Metallica, Coldplay, Rihanna, Elton John, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Motorhead, Slipknot, Lenny Kravitz, Shakira, Mana, Evanescence and Guns N' Roses.

Cirque du Soleil's 'Michael Jackson The Immortal'   (October 2-July 17, 2012, North America) 
Famed high-flying troupe Cirque du Soleil kicks off its tribute to the King of Pop in their own hometown of Montreal on October 2. The lavish dance-filled production will travel to 47 cities in North America, and organizers announced that the show will tour the rest of the globe, but dates and details are not yet available.

The Rugby World Cup, held every four years, sees the top teams from around the world competing in the world's largest, and most prestigious, rugby tournament. This is the seventh time the tournament has been held in New Zealand however the All Blacks haven't won since 1987.

117th Australian Rules Football Grand Final (October 1, Melbourne, Australia)
The Australian Rules Football grand final is Australia's most important sporting event. "Aussie Rules" (aka "footy") is a variant of football, rugby and Gaelic football and is considered a matter of national pride. The AFL Grand Final is the most attended, most watched and most followed annual sporting event in the country. In 2010, the event attracted 2,768,000 Australian viewers and 2,687,000 watched the replay.

The New Yorker Festival is an annual cultural arts festival from  The New Yorker magazine featuring a range of authors, actors, musicians, scientists, and other notable guests, including Steve Martin, Owen Wilson, director David Cronenberg, Ralph Fiennes, Jonathan Franzen and Malcolm Gladwell for panels, conversations and screenings.

51st Genoa Boat Show (October 1-9, Genoa, Italy)
