You will be familiar with all the "fly free - pay only the tax" airline offers. In fact, the "taxes" are usually calculated so that they at least cover the airline's marginal costs for carrying an additional passenger. But about once a year, an airline prices a deal that is genuinely sold at below cost.
This time, it is the turn of SkyEurope. If you book before midnight tomorrow, you can fly between Stansted and Budapest or Bratislava (close to Vienna) for £10 return. It applies for travel between 17 October and 25 March next year, but the fare is available only on quieter days - typically Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and not at all over Christmas and the New Year. Slightly pricier fares are available on other SkyEurope routes.
Warning of the week: no flights to no-frills airport
Italy's leading low-cost airport is to close next weekend, causing disruption for thousands of travellers. Bergamo Orio al Serio airport, north-east of Milan, will close from 8am on Thursday 6 October to 10pm the following Sunday for what are called "extraordinary runway works". Many flights will be diverted to Brescia airport, about 60 miles east of Bergamo. A special shuttle bus will run every hour or two between Brescia's airport and Milan, taking two hours and costing €14 (£10).
