Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The destination

New York's Ground Zero Memorial Park opens in time for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Another contemplative green space is the High Line (a park set on an old elevated docks railway) with a new extension that now runs from 20th Street, through West Chelsea, and north to 30th Street (nycgo.com).

The route

The 49,000-tonne Spirit of France, one of the largest ferries ever designed for the Dover Strait, enters service for P&O (poferries.com/newships), sailing between Dover and Calais. It's 700ft long, 100ft high, it has 12 decks and carries 2,000 people and 1,050 cars.

The accommodation

The 120-room Park Inn Cape Town Foreshore (rezidor.com) opens this month. It has a rooftop terrace and pool with harbour views.

The cultural attraction

Stedelijk (stedelijk.nl), the Dutch state museum of modern art, finally reopens in Amsterdam after a major refurbishment that has radicalised both its 19th-century neo-Renaissance façade and the 1930s interior. The collection includes works by Matisse, Picasso and Warhol.

The great outdoors

The Skjern Å National Park in Jutland (nationalparker.skovog natur.dk) officially comes into being in Denmark, the last country in the EU to designate a national park. It's a land of rivers, salmon, heaths and bogs.

The family holiday

Neilson Adventures (neilsonadventures.co.uk) offers a bonding experience on a new three-day Family Survival Adventure in Snowdonia, guided by a former SAS soldier. Adults £250, children £135.

The adventure

Explore Russia and China on the silk train from Moscow to Beijing with Great Rail Journeys (greatrail.com). Highlights include the ancient city of Khiva and the Great Wall, and camel riding in the Gobi Desert. This new private escorted tour departs 20 September. From £8,995 per person.

The British day out

The Jerwood Gallery on the seafront at Hastings in Sussex (jerwoodgallery.org) showcases its collection of 20th- and 21st-century British art.

The winter sports

As skiing in the southern hemisphere winds down, Tignes (tignes.net) in the French Alps, opens, marking a new season - if such a thing still exists.

All prices are per person, based on two sharing, unless otherwise stated. Hotel room prices are per room per night, unless otherwise stated
