From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Rome Ciampino airport has shut due to a fire in the terminal.

Aeroporti di Roma, which manages the airport, said that the terminal was evacuated as a precautionary measure when smoke was found in a basement area.

Neither passengers nor airport infrastructure were affected, the company said.

“ADR staff are assisting passengers waiting for the terminal to return to normal operations,” Aeroporti di Roma said.

The airport, 12km southeast of Rome city centre, is used by budget airline Ryanair as well as other no-frills carriers.

Passengers have shared images on social media of the evacuated airport terminal.

Journalist Jessica Phelan said that the departures area had been closed for an hour and a half.

Two flights from Ciampino have been cancelled this morning, to Vilnius and Prague. Six flights have been delayed: to Budapest, Eindhoven, Berlin, Madrid, Brussels and London.

A Ryanair flight from Berlin was diverted to Rome Fiumicino airport, the city’s main hub, according to Ciampino flight data.

Aeroporti di Roma advises passengers flying to or from Rome Ciampino to contact their airline for the latest news.
