Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Calgary concern
We were shocked and disappointed to see the Calgary Stampede promoted in The Independent. Although the animal rights objections are mentioned, the article paints a rosy picture. Despite attempts to improve safety, the stampede has proved deadly: 39 horses have died in the past 10 years. The deadliest competitions are the chuck-wagon races, in which horses have suffered broken legs, heart attacks and broken backs from pulling "pioneer" wagons around a race track. Calgary is rightfully proud of its many assets, but the Calgary Stampede is an obsolete tradition that leaves an ugly pall on the region.

Airport angst
Airports like Birmingham which charge for luggage trolleys and for the privilege of stopping your car for 60 seconds are contributing to a "race to the bottom". At Birmingham, you used to be able to pull up at the edge of the terminal, pick up/drop off and leave. If you've ever flown through Dubai or Doha you'll know that they care about customers and don't try cheap and nasty rip-off tactics.

I thought BA was desperate to open routes to emerging economies, but when they do get hold of more slots they use them to fly to ... Leeds. They moan that Heathrow needs to expand, yet refuse to offer a single international flight from outside London. Northerners will back airlines such as KLM, Lufthansa and Emirates that support northern airports.

I booked a long haul BA return flight from Manchester via Heathrow yesterday thinking everything would go through Terminal 5. Then I read Simon Calder's article about BA moving flights around at the airport and checked my booking. It turns out I had booked an old BMI flight and would have to transfer from T5 arrivals to T1 for my return to Manchester. Not very happy but just rang BA service desk and they immediately, and without charge, moved me on to a T5 departing flight. Excellent. Just a pity they don't highlight this matter prior to booking, though.

Beyond Gothenburg
If you have a bit of time to spare, take a trip round the southern archipelago, the ferries are included on the public transport travelcard. The two main clusters of islands – the Southern archipelago (Sodra skargarden) and Northern archipelago (Norra skargarden) are easily accessible from the city. For the southern islands, visitors can take ferries from Saltholmen, a short tram ride from the city centre. The northern islands are reached by car ferry from Lilla Varholmen on Hisingen.
