AIDA's parent company Carnival confirmed August 3 that two new 3,250-passenger vessels will be constructed for the company for delivery in 2015 and 2016.
They will be the largest ships ever constructed for AIDA Cruises, which specializes in lively European routes and targets young people with bright colors and a range of nightlife options aboard its seven "clubships."
Carnival also confirmed that another of its brands, Costa Cruises, will get a new 132,500-ton vessel, capable of carrying 3,700 passengers, in 2014.
It too will be the largest ship ever constructed for Costa Cruises, although it pales in comparison to the enormous 225,000-ton Oasis class ships from Royal Caribbean, the largest cruise ships in the world.
Last month, Costa's newest ship, Costa Favolosa, set sail on its maiden voyage after being named in the Italian city of Trieste timed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Italian unification.
The new Costa ships are set to replace some of the line's older vessels, beginning with the Costa Marina, which will leave the fleet in November this year, Carival has confirmed.
A total of ten new ships will be built across all of Carnival's brands between now and 2016.
