The man confessed to sneaking into the Sonesta Resort in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He told the Beauford County Sheriff’s Office that he felt unwell after taking a cocktail of drugs including hallucinogenic mushrooms and decided to illegally crash at the property.
He stayed for three days, pretending he was with the previous guests who had already checked out, and enjoyed room service and spa treatments. Staff at the hotel did not initially realise what was going on as the man used the in-room phone to order.
According to the police report, the man admitted to the charges of obtaining services without paying, which according to South Carolina law is punishable with a fine of $1,000, up to six months in jail, or both.
When arrested he handed police a brown bag containing hallucinogenic “magic” mushrooms and said he had recently taken some. He also told officers that he had just returned from a party in Atlanta where he consumed ecstasy, bath salts, meth and mushrooms.
He also said he had done the same thing in other Hilton Head hotels but would not disclose the names of the establishments. The police found a room key for the Omni Hilton Head in his belongings.
Hilton Head is a seaside town in South Carolina and has been a holiday destination since the 1960s. It draws a range of holidaymakers who visit for its Atlantic beaches and golf courses.
