London to Scarborough by rail, Hyper Japan, and Crail Food Festival: Travel agenda
Where to go and what to know
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.1. Bahamas alert
The Foreign Office has stepped up its warning for visitors to the Bahamas, saying: "The number of break-ins and robbery incidents reported to the High Commission has increased. Don't walk alone away from the main hotels, tourist areas, beaches and downtown Nassau, particularly after dark. Take care if travelling on local buses after dusk on routes away from the main tourist areas."
2. Hyperactive
Hyper Japan, a celebration of Japanese culture, takes place at the O2 in London from 10-12 July. The festival will include music performances, food stalls, video games, anime and manga merchandise, a fashion show and costume parades. Tickets from £13.
3. Wizz weight
The leading Eastern European no-frills airline, Wizz Air, charges extra for larger pieces of cabin baggage. But the carrier has relaxed its weight restriction; families on holiday this summer can combine allowances.
4. Test it out
The Greyhound on the Test, a 19th-century Hampshire coaching inn, has added a trio of new bedrooms. Located in Stockbridge, in the heart of the Test Valley, the Greyhound was 2014 Michelin Pub of the Year. The new rooms are located in Fleet Cottage, next to the main building. Doubles from £90, B&B.
5. Wholly Crail
Crail Food Festival takes place on the coast of Fife, from 12-14 June. The line-up includes a series of street food pop-ups and producers' markets, top chefs including Michelin-starred Geoffrey Smeddle, and a big harbour lunch with plenty of opportunities to stock up for a picnic. The weekend will start with a dinner and film night celebrating local Fife producers on the Friday evening.
6. Oz flights
Airlines based in mainland China offer some of the lowest fares between London and Australia. China Southern, whose hub is Guangzhou, is adding four extra flights to Melbourne (pictured) from 11 September. Returns in October are currently as low as £650.
7. Pinch of Salt
Salt Hotels has opened The Chequit on Shelter Island, between the North and South Forks of Long Island, New York. The 37-room inn sports shabby-chic decor and restaurant, Red Maple. Doubles from $218, B&B.
8. Scarboro' fare
London St Pancras is getting re-connected with Scarborough. The summer service to the North Yorkshire resort will run each Saturday at 6.37am until 5 September – serving Luton, Leicester and Derby en route. The return service leaves Scarborough at 5.03pm, reaching London four hours later. Advance returns for next weekend are available at £49.
