The pretty Polish city scored five stars for value for money in a Which? Travel survey, the only city in Europe to do so.
Krakow also received the highest overall score in the survey – 91 per cent – alongside Valencia.
Which? members ranked European cities based on accommodation, food and drink, cultural attractions, shopping, ease of getting around and value for money, which gave them a score out of 100 per cent.
Commenting on Krakow’s ranking as cheapest European city break, Which? said: “Not only is the average hotel price just £63 per room, per night, but eating out is also a steal. Avoid the main square rip-offs and you’ll get a good meal for less than a tenner, and a pint of beer for £2.”
Valencia, which also scored 91 per cent, was ranked the best weekend break thanks to its prime location on the Balearic coast, lively old quarter and cheap prices – a glass of wine in Valencia costs as little as €2.50 (£2.20).
Budapest took the top spot for the best spa break city, with more than 100 hot springs dotted around the city, such as the vast baroque Szechenyi baths.
Tallinn, a new entry to the Which? survey, was also ranked the best short break. “Within its medieval city walls lies a snow-globe scene of stone towers, hill top turrets, cobbled streets and domed churches, all set against the Baltic sea,” said Which?
Which? polled 4,353 members during April 2018.
