Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

John Colone, a resident of the township in Michigan, is opening up his mayoral pad so those living in the US state can take his place as mayor for the night.
He said: “I am the biggest Halloween fan in the world (and the underworld), so I hope that our little slice of paradise can fill fellow Halloween lovers with all of the frightful chills and spooky sensations of the season.
“And to our guests and soon-to-be Mayors, I trust you’ll find that there is no place more welcoming than Hell on Earth – we can’t wait to show you a helluva good time!”
Would-be mayors will stay at the “Mayor’s Lair”, which has been set up with a queen-sized bed for two and a gothic seating area.
Guests can enjoy the town of Hell at their leisure, with Colone recommending Hell Hole Diner and Hell Saloon for food. There are scenic hiking trails nearby, or you could chill out in front of the cozy fire pit and watch horror movies and carve pumpkins.
At the Locks of Love Bridge, the local reverend is even happy to officiate marriages for those who might wish to tie the knot in Hell. Social distancing will be maintained at all times, of course.
Bookings, via Airbnb, will open on 14 October at 12pm EST with three separate nights available – 18, 21 and 24 October – and the unique stay costs $31 per night, plus taxes and fees.
Airbnb has listed several one-off stays in the past.
Most recently Will Smith listed the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air mansion on the home sharing site.
The last Blockbusters has also been transformed into a temporary Airbnb apartment.
