From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A passenger reportedly left an offensive note for a flight attendant after being asked to wear their mask over their nose.

Handwritten on an inflight sick bag, the note calls the member of American Airlines cabin crew a “mask nazi” and a “glorified maid”.

A photo of the note was shared on social media by Twitter user @hibiscuslacroix, who captioned the picture: “Today a passenger handed this to a flight attendant upon deplaning.

“The flight attendant had asked her to wear her mask over her nose. Incredibly done with the general public.”

The woman’s note read: “Nobody cares about your stupid seat policies or your nose issues. We pay your salary and your attitude is unnecessary.

“The very fact that we have to listen and kowtow to a nobody who does s*** except collect our trash and serve crappy food makes me absolutely ill.”

The passenger added: “If it wasn’t for this job, you would be cleaning motel rooms for $2 tips and meth.

“I made sure to write this on a bag labelled as to what I think your life actually is… A WASTE.”

American Airlines has said the passenger has been banned from flying with the airline for the timebeing.

A spokesperson told The Independent: “American Airlines is investigating an incident involving a customer passing an offensive and derogatory note to one of our flight attendants, and this customer’s ability to travel on American has been suspended.

“Our flight attendants are professionals who play a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of our passengers, and we will not tolerate mistreatment of them.”

The shocking incident follows several cases of travellers being removed from flights, trains, and other modes of transport for refusing to wear a mask.

One woman was kicked off an American Airlines flight after she refused to wear a face mask onboard the aircraft in July.

The unnamed female was videoed by a fellow passenger as she was forced to depart the service from Ohio to North Carolina.

The footage shows travellers cheering and clapping as she exits the plane.

“You can clap all you want,” the woman can be heard saying as she leaves the flight after gathering up her bags.
