Pets can now join the jet set thanks to the Pet Travel Scheme (0870 241 1710; www.defra.gov.uk). The scheme allows dogs, cats, rodents, rabbits and ferrets to travel to around 70 countries outside the UK without being quarantined on their return. Kimpton Hotels' Summit Lodge in Whistler offers pet pampering in the form of beds, dog walking, treats and a pet photographer, all at no additional cost to guests. A directory of pet-friendly walking areas, pet-sitters and grooming services in Whistler is also provided and guests missing pets left at home can seek comfort in "rental" goldfish bowls.

The Cadogan, England
You don't have to take your pet abroad to spoil it. At the Cadogan, which was refurbished last year, Philipp Plein has created ultra-modern mini stainless-steel and faux-ostrich leather beds for dogs. They're also given organic biscuits and mineral water on arrival. Other services include walking and grooming, ensuring that your dog is smart enough to be seen on the streets of Knightsbridge.

Hotel de Crillon, France
Paris - the spiritual home of the poodle - offers a suitably illustrious pied-à-terre for animals and their owners at the Hôtel de Crillon. Although having pets in hotels is a growing trend, it is still unusual to find a grand establishment offering such indulgent concessions for animals. The "Dog de Crillon" package - also available for cats - has everything from custom-sized beds to personalised Crillon nametags and room service. There are the usual walking, sitting and grooming services and the hotel has an enviable location between the Tuileries Gardens and the Champs Elysées - both ideal for walks.

Loews Beverly Hills Hotel, US
One of two North American chains that prides itself on its pet-friendliness, the "Loews Loves Pets" programme includes a room service menu featuring vegetarian starters, bottled water and milk as well as a directory of pet services. Walking can be arranged and leashes and toys are provided. New to the chain is "Pumped-Up Pets", a programme of outdoor exercise for guests and their pets. Only in Los Angeles.

Westin Turnberry, Scotland
Westin Hotels' Heavenly brand doesn't stop at people. The Turnberry Resort in Scotland has launched a Heavenly pet menu, which includes a dog bed, food and water bowls, a mat, ID tag and a welcome kit. There are plenty of exercise options with the rugged Ayshire coast on its doorstep. Meanwhile, the Westin Trianon Palace in Versailles stretches to pet psychologists for animals unable to settle into their new surroundings.
