Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The year of the Tiger is almost upon us, with celebrations for Chinese New Year imminent from China to Chinatowns across the globe. If you want to get in this Sunday's festivities, Flight Centre ( flightcentre.co.uk) has last-minute returns from Heathrow to Hong Kong on British Airways available from £477. The offer is valid for travel until 25 March.

If you can wait a little longer, Netflights.com has a package for £8 less. A three-night break at the three-star Harbour Plaza North Point in Hong Kong, including Jet Airways flights from Heathrow via Mumbai costs £469 per person. (Valid for departures between 1 May and 30 June. Book by 15 February.)

You could also celebrate the tiger in Sumatra. The Indonesian island is home to the rare feline, and there are wild and unspoilt beaches and wildlife-packed forests on offer as well. Travelsphere ( travelsphere.co.uk) has a 17-day Sumatra, Java and Bali tour departing 11 March priced £1,979 per person, which includes international flights from Heathrow, internal flights and transfers, 14 nights’ mixed-board accommodation and excursions with a guide.

More wildlife – from elephants at the Shimba Hills Reserve to the sea life offshore – is on offer on the Kenyan coast, where Dealchecker ( dealchecker.co.uk) has a 14-night break from just £399 per person. The trip departs from Gatwick or Manchester on 1 March and includes flights and 14 nights’ B&B at the Shanzu Paradise Beach hotel, north of Mombasa. Book by 20 February.

Another impressive reduction is being offered by Hayes & Jarvis ( hayesandjarvis.co.uk), which has a half-price sale on some of its Asian destinations. Among these is a trip to Sri Lanka, reduced from £1,398 to £699 per person. The price includes 14 nights’ B&B at the five-star Taj Exotica Bentota and SriLankan Airlines flights departing Heathrow on 14 May. Book by 28 February.

Finally, with Chinese New Year and carnival season just days away, if you can’t escape the country in time, then head to Florida where Mardi Gras celebrations are extended at the theme parks until April. Ocean Florida ( ocean-florida.co.uk) is offering 14 nights at the Doubletree Resort Orlando, plus flights from Heathrow and transfers costs £479 per person and is valid for travel until 15 March.
