Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Given the number of Valentine’s deals that are pouring into the travel desk inbox this week, love is most definitely in the air.

And where could be more romantic than Paris? Stay at the Hotel Le Sainte-Beuve in St-Germain des Pres, where the décor is dominated by reds and pinks and was conceived by renowned British designer David Hicks. There’s a crackling log fire, cosy bar and elegant rooms. Online guide and booking site i-escape.com is offering stays for €159 per room per night over Valentine’s weekend.

Setting your romantic weekend against the filmic backdrop of Manhattan is also bound to impress. Virgin Holidays and Hip Hotels ( vhiphotels.co.uk) are offering a three-night break at the Soho Grand, with flights departing 13 February, breakfast and transfers, for £1,099 per person.

For a fraction of that price, you could head to the city of spires, Prague, and take in its atmospheric baroque, renaissance, art nouveau and gothic architecture. Flight Centre ( flightcentre.co.uk) has a three-night break for £195 per person, departing on 12 February, which includes flights from Gatwick and B&B at the Arbi Hotel. Quote reference PRGLONVD1 to book.

Even closer to home, The Fitzwilliam Hotel in Belfast ( fitzwilliamhotelbelfast.com; bit.ly/fitzwilliambelfast is offering a Valentine’s package for £90 per person per night on 12 and 13 February or £80 on 14 February and includes a four-course dinner with wine and accommodation in an executive bedroom. Fore more privacy, Coast and Country Cottages ( coastandcountry.co.uk) has a special offer on the one-bedroom Bay Tree Cottage near Totnes in Devon. For £214, you can rent the cottage – complete with exposed beams, Inglenook fireplace and elegant design – for three nights starting 12 February.

If you don’t fancy sharing your romantic experience with a host of other lovebirds, then Windjammer Landing in St Lucia ( windjammer-landing.com) is extending its Valentine’s offer for the entire month of February. The Valentine’s Day Romance Escape package starts at £188 per person per night and includes a welcome bottle of champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries. There are also discounts on spa treatments and boat trips and a free night offered to couples celebrating their 20th anniversary.

Finally, the lack of a partner need not deprive you of a Valentine’s celebration. The Grove hotel in Hertfordshire ( thegrove.co.uk) has put together a Get Over It package for up to four friends (in two bedrooms), which includes a selection of “therapeutic” DVDs with chocolates and tissues on hand, an hour in the spa and comfort food menu. The price is £245 per person per night for stays between 14 and 19 February.
