Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Ne’er cast a clout till May be out, or so the proverb goes. The warm weather may well have been getting many of us into a frenzy of shorts, flip-flops and barbecues this last week, but let’s not forget that spring has a nasty habit of, er, springing surprises on us (rain, wind, volcanoes...). If you’re the optimistic sort, then there are plenty of offers to keep you on home soil.

Dorset Coastal Cottages ( www.dorsetcoastalcottages.com) has last-minute availability for some of its properties over the bank holiday weekend, including Barton Cottage in Coryates near Weymouth, which sleeps six and costs £301 for seven nights’ rental starting on Friday. Coast and Country Cottages ( www.coastandcountry.co.uk) is offering 20 per cent off some of its South Devon properties, including the two-bedroom apartment, Dartview, in Dartmouth. Available for a week starting on 7 or 14 May, the apartment costs £370 per week. In Aberdeenshire, Book Direct Rooms ( www.bookdirectrooms.com) is offering 50 per cent off stays at Kildrummy Castle Hotel. A three-night stay at the country house hotel, commencing on Friday, costs £253.50 for two people, including breakfast.

Alternatively, you could happily pack your shorts and sunglasses for Mallorca, where Villas4you ( www.villas4you.co.uk) is offering a selection of its properties with a 30 per cent discount, including Villa Moix in Puerto Pollenca. Sleeping six, the villa has mountain views, a pool and palm-fringed garden. Seven nights’ rental commencing 8 May costs £395.50, rising to £555.80 on 22 May. Similarly, Sunvil ( www.sunvil.co.uk) has as seven night break in Kefalonia starting on 8 May for £329 per person, which includes self-catering in a studio at the Lourdas Beach Apartments and flights from Manchester and transfers. Flights from Gatwick cost £10 more.

For less than double that price you could go all the way to Cuba, where The Holiday Place ( www.theholidayplace.co.uk) is offering a 13-night twin-centre holiday for £649 per person. The bargain price includes flights departing Gatwick on 5 or 12 May, 10 nights’ all-inclusive at the Club Amigo Atlantico in Guardalavaca, three nights’ B&B at the Comodoro Bungalows in Havana and transfers. The Holiday Place is also offering free childrens' accommodation, meals and drinks for families travelling to Dubai for selected departures in early June.
