Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The countdown has begun – it’s exactly a month to go until Christmas. Which means travel – excluding venturing out to visit family – is usually ruled out until the New Year. But it’s nice to have something to look forward to once the festive season is over, whether it’s hitting the slopes or soaking up some winter sun.

Netflights ( netflights.com) is offering a week’s all-inclusive at the three-star Le Tropical resort in Mauritius for £999 per person, which includes Emirates flights from Gatwick and Birmingham via Dubai and is valid for departures from 16 January to 24 March 2010.

Meanwhile Virgin Holidays ( virginholidays.com) is offering a week at the Halycon Cove by rex resorts in Antigua from £695, which includes flights departing Gatwick between 13-20 January, transfers and room only accommodation. Kuoni ( kuoni.co.uk) is taking advantage of Malaysian Airlines’ latest offers with deals to Malaysia: seven nights’ room only at the five-star Shangri-La Rasa Ria in Borneo costs £849 per person, with flights departing Heathrow between 24-31 January, and transfers.

SAS ( flysas.co.uk) has just launched a flight sale to Scandinavia, too. Flights to Helsinki, Copenhagen and Oslo between 5 January and 15 March start at £59 one way. Alternatively you leave behind the Christmas lights and hit the neon lights of Las Vegas. Trailfinders ( trailfinders.com) has four nights from £475 per person, including Continental flights departing Heathrow on 9 January via Newark and room only at the Circus Circus hotel.

Or if you just need to unwind after Christmas, the Retallack Resort & Spa in Cornwall ( retallackresort.com) is offering a gourmet break from £299 per person, which includes seven night’s B&B, plus daily lunches at favourites such as Rick Stein’s Fish & Chips in Padstow and Fifteen in Watergate Bay. The offer is valid until 31 January, excluding Christmas and New Year.

If you’re prepared to go away this side of Christmas, then Kenwood Travel ( kenwoodtravel.com) is offering seven nights’ all-inclusive at the four-star Coconut Bay Beach Resort in St Lucia from £799 per person. The price includes Virgin Atlantic flights departing Gatwick between 1-8 December and transfers.

Those with time on their hands could take advantage of STA Travel’s offer on a 32-day trip through Central America, from Mexico to Costa Rica. The price of £1,002 per person includes room-only accommodation, ground transportation and excursions, but not international flights. The trip departs Mexico on 16 December ( statravel.co.uk).

And there are still some good deals for trips over Christmas, too. Ski Total ( skitotal.com) is offering seven nights in Val d’Isere for £599 per person for a 20 December departure. The price includes flights from Stansted, transfers and catered chalet accommodation at the Chalet Hotel Champs Avelins, plus three days of ski hosting.
