Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Q. I'm getting married in September and the weekend after, my wife and I will be spending two nights at a London hotel, but we can't decide on which one. My wife-to-be likes the idea of staying in a boutique hotel in Soho – can you recommend any and would they provide something 'different' for our honeymoon? We could pay up to £400 for two nights with breakfast. Tony Smart, by email
A. This is likely to be one of the most important holidays in your lives, so you'll want to get it right.
London will provide all the excitement befitting your "minimoon", with dozens of distinctive hotels and diverse restaurants, plus any permutation of luxury or indulgence you might desire. Five high-end hotels are opening in the capital this summer, with room rates starting at around £400 a night, without breakfast.
The Ham Yard Hotel (020 3642 2000; firmdalehotels.com) is the latest, set in the beating heart of Soho, with whimsical interiors designed by its imaginative owner, Kit Kemp. You'll pay around £370 a night, room only, in September.
Overall, room rates continue to rise in the capital – an average night now costs more than £122 according to the Hotels.com Hotel Price Index, while TripAdvisor recently named London as the world's most expensive city break, with a stay in a four-star hotel costing on average £311.80.
Soho is prime territory and you'll pay accordingly. However, if you're willing to forgo a few bells and whistles for the sake of staying in a vibrant part of the city, consider The Nadler (020 3697 3697; thenadler.com), which bills itself as "an affordable luxury boutique hotel" slap bang in the middle of Soho. Rooms are stylishly decorated and come with a kitchenette, plus complimentary tea, coffee, Wi-Fi and newspapers. A weekend in mid-September will cost £370; special "Champagne Breaks" are available, including a bottle of bubbly, breakfast from a nearby bakery, restaurant discount vouchers and room upgrades.
For something quirkier, The Grazing Goat (020 7724 7243; thegrazinggoat.co.uk) is a luxurious pub with rooms on a peaceful road in Marylebone, a hop away from Soho, where B&B doubles start at £205.
