This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

Footage has emerged of the moment cabin crew realised that their Dusseldorf-bound flight had accidentally landed in Edinburgh, 500 miles away from their intended destination.

Amused passengers filmed the moment when the cabin crew member said: “Holy schmoly! No-one to Edinburgh? No-one to Edinburgh?”

Realising that the moment was likely to be captured on camera, he then implored passengers to refrain from taking pictures or video.

That didn’t stop one passenger who captured the bemused giggles of their fellow passengers.

British Airways flight 3271, which was operated by WDL Aviation, departed London City airport at 7.46am, arriving in the Scottish capital at 8.47am, rather than the expected time of arrival in Dusseldorf of 9.40am.

The aircraft remained on the tarmac for two and half hours before finally setting off for Germany.

The error has led to some amusing online reactions, including an exchange between the Dusseldorf tourism board and its Edinburgh counterpart.

The Dusseldorf tourist board wrote on Twitter: “Where do you wanna go? #BA3271”, adding a poll for users to vote in.

This backfired when 77 per cent of the 2,884 voters opted for Edinburgh.

In response, tourism board This Is Edinburgh posted a series of picturesque images of the Scottish capital with the heading, “Decisions, decisions…”.

Dusseldorf responded with their own selection of images and the comment: “Yes, really difficult.”

The warring cities exchanged light-hearted barbs, with Dusseldorf asking Edinburgh, “Do you want to phone a friend?” in relation to the conflict in deciding which city was best.

The exchange finally ended when one user posted a gif which read: “Both? Both? Both. Both is good.”

Twitter users claimed they were keen to visit both cities – with a few notable exceptions. User Dave wrote: “When I was in Edinburgh I saw a pigeon eating some sick. I've never been to Dusseldorf.”

Elsewhere, no-frills airline Ryanair offered to send British Airways a copy of Geography for Dummies.
