From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A British Airways passenger has complained of being served an “absolutely disgusting” breakfast on a £1,200 long-haul flight.

Sandra Arthur, from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, was travelling from O’Hare International Airport in Chicago to London Heathrow when she was given the “soggy” bruschetta with egg and cheese.

Ms Arthur shared a picture of the unappetising meal on Facebook, which showed bits of egg scattered around some damp-looking bread, adding that many other passengers also complained.

“We could not eat this and when we complained we were offer a cold croissant,” she wrote.

“The flight attendant was extremely embarrassed but professional.”

The meal was served on BA flight 296 on 27 July.

Arthur shared the complaint on a Facebook group called British Airways Complaints advice, posting: “Breakfast was absolutely disgusting....a soggy bruschetta with egg and cheese... Bruschetta was difficult to get out of the box and the egg and cheese stuck to the box.

“And as the flight attendant said, he cannot believe they are expected to prepare toasted bread in a steam oven.”

British Airways apologised for the sub-standard fare.

A spokesperson for the UK national carrier said: “We pride ourselves on the quality of the meals we offer on board, and have heavily invested in our catering, in all cabins.

“We are sorry that our standards fell below our customer’s expectation on this occasion.”

It is not the first in-flight meal to stir up trouble.

A British Airways passenger was so dismayed by his underwhelming breakfast on a flight to Miami that he vowed to never use the airline again.

Andrew Hedge was served a “very dry bun with a random layer of cream cheese on it”, which he described as “disgraceful”, during a £1,200 flight from Heathrow to the Florida city last summer.

The 49-year-old businessman said: “I was absolutely shocked about the poor presentation and quality of the so-called breakfast considering this was not a cheap ticket.”
