Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Berlin has been named as Europe’s best city for families. The survey, commissioned by holiday home rental site HouseTrip, assessed European cities on factors such as the number of family-friendly galleries and museums, safety, pollution and crime.
The Independent Travel Offers: Our favourite Berlin holiday
The Iberian Peninsula scored particularly highly, with Valencia, Lisbon and Madrid filling spots two, four and five respectively. Budapest, famous for its castle and parliament building, came third.
Valencia was found to have the lowest crime levels, Berlin had the second lowest pollution level, and Budapest came in as the cheapest to visit, with the average cost of a meal at a budget restaurant coming in at only £3.84.
City breaks, normally associated with couples, are becoming more popular as they can offer something for all ages. Parents can take the kids on a trip to a gallery and then head to a park, with plenty of local restaurants and theatres to choose from for the evenings.
Cost can be a big consideration when taking the kids, so it's no surprise that many families are choosing more cost effective ways to stay abroad. The rise of sites such as Airbnb and HouseTrip has made it easy - and cheap - for families to decamp to a new flat or house in cities across the globe.
