Hot weather, laughter, good food and stunning views have emerged as the major factors which make a holiday unforgettable, according to a poll.

The survey of 2,000 British adults found a memory-laden holiday also required at least five fun activities, such as wine tasting, jet-skiing and skydiving and escaping to enjoy nature.

One in three said spending time with family was crucial – while one in 10 thought an adult-only holiday was the best way to enjoy a sunshine break.

One in five preferred to holiday in style, opting for an exclusive experience – with five-star hospitality, high-end dining and first-class travel in high demand.

“Our study shows that everyone’s vision of their perfect holiday is different, said Oscar Gonzalez, global marketing director of Iberostar Hotels & Resorts. ''And creating a memorable trip should be seamless, whether you’re looking to unwind on a beach or fuel your wanderlust with a big adventure.”

When it came to making a memorable family trip, 42 per cent of respondents said it was important for their kids to have access to lots of activities.

One third said it was good for children to make new friends, while four in 10 said they would need access to a pool.

Romantic respondents said getting married or engaged made their holiday truly memorable, while one in seven suggested holidaying with a loved one made it a trip to remember.

Keeping healthy on holiday was also an important part of a great holiday, as four in 10 said they loved to walk and hike, while a third thought swimming was a good fitness activity.

One third agreed their holiday would be more memorable if the company they booked with took measures to be more environmentally friendly.

Nearly all of those polled agreed that the food on holiday was fundamental to creating a memorable experience – with 40 per cent preferring to eat sustainable, locally caught foods.

Italy and New York were found to be among the top city destinations.
