Switzerland: Something to Declare
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Destination of the year: Expo.02
Western Switzerland will come alive next month when Expo.02, the Swiss National Exhibition, begins. It takes place in four towns, plus a floating art space known as the Arteplage Mobile du Jura (AMJ). Each of the fixed locations is on a lakeshore, and each has a concept to explore. Biel-Bienne considers Power and Freedom; Yverdon-les-Bains looks at the Universe and Me; Neuchatel dwells on Nature and Artifice; and Murten-Morat contemplates the Moment and Eternity. The AMJ will stage theatre, discussions and music as it drifts around. The best source for more information is the website, www.expo.02.ch, or you can call 00 41 900 02 02 02. Expo.02 ends on 20 October.

Celebration of the year: paddling for a century
The Lake Lucerne Navigation Company (00 41 41 367 6767, www.lakelucerne.ch) is celebrating the 100th year of the paddlesteamer Unterwalden, one of five vessels that form an important part of the shipping line's fleet. A series of special cruises will operate through the summer, including evening sailings in July and August.
Bargain of the week: change planes at Zurich to save cash
Europe's newest airline, SWISS, began flying last Sunday. SWISS will offer plenty of cut-price long-haul flights via its hub at Zurich. The initial deals are from London Heathrow, Birmingham and Manchester to US destinations: Los Angeles and Miami, for £315 return, when booked through Airline Network (01772 727272, www.netflights.com). These are valid for departures from tomorrow until 13 June. Regrettably, stopovers in Switzerland are not possible.
