Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Hôtel Parc Saint-Séverin

You don’t need the deepest of pockets to enjoy sky-scraping views of Paris. At the Hôtel Parc Saint-Séverin, an atmospsheric Latin Quarter location is paired with a reasonable price. If you book the terrace room, you can tuck in to breakfast out on a private balcony overlooking Saint-Séverin St Severin church church, one of the city’s iconic buildings.

Hotel Parc Saint-Séverin, 22 rue de La Parcheminerie, 75005 Paris (00 33 1 43 543 217; paris-hotel-parcsaintseverin.com ). Doubles from €167, breakfast €14 per person; if you book a non-refundable room online in advance, rates fall to as little as €114.

Le Meurice

Definitely one for traditionalists. If you aren’t won over by the majestic rue de Rivoli approach, the lavishly renovated interiors should do it. All that glitters is here a dizzying confection of gilt, marble and crystal. When your eyes need a break from the bling, focus them on the views through the windows instead. Many of the bedrooms have great outlooks but, if you’re feeling flush, take a turn on the terrace of the Belle Étoile Suite and enjoy a 360-degree panorama over Paris.

Le Meurice, 228 rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris (00 33 1 44 581 010; lemeurice.com ). Doubles from €640, room only.

Pytheas Vivas

At this floating B&B you’re not so much looking out at the view as wallowing in it. A basic but comfortable one-bed houseboat, available to rent by the night, it’s moored in the city centre and offers great views along the Seine. Even the bathroom has a view of the Assemblée Nationale.

Bateau Pytheas Vivas, Port des Champs-Elysées, 75008 Paris (00 33 1 42 680 585; bed-breakfast-paris.eu ; online booking only). From €170 per night, with breakfast.

Hotel Lumen

Set beside the Louvre, the neo-Baroque Hotel Lumen provides plenty of Parisian shimmer and sparkle, but does so in a contemporary way. Designed by Claudio Colucci, interiors feature over-sized bubble headboards, hi-tech sound systems and super-indulgent bathrooms.

Hotel Lumen, Paris Louvre, 15 rue des Pyramides, 75001 Paris (00 33 1 44 507 700; hotel-lumenparis.com ). Doubles from €294, with breakfast.

Le Sezz

So often in Paris, luxury means Louis XV styling in the bedroom and death-by-marble in the bathroom. If you prefer a cleaner aesthetic, help is at hand in the shape of Hotel Sezz. The hotel takes its name from its 16th-arrondissement location, and the sharply styled rooms, tucked behind a classic façade, feature furniture by the hip French designer Christophe Pillet. That the hotel manages to be ultra-contemporary without being cold is a big draw. So, too, are the views. For the ultimate decadence, book the Suite Eiffel with its show-stopping view of the Eiffel Tower and the city’s zinc rooftops.

Hotel Sezz, 6 Avenue Frémiet, |75016 Paris (00 33 1 56 752 626; hotelsezz.com ). Doubles from €335, room only.

Terrass Hotel

Montmartre’s only four-star hotel, this grand 19th-century building promises comfort and a handy location between the Sacré-Coeur and the Moulin Rouge and spectacular views from many of its rooms. The roof terrace is open from April to September, from where you can see the Basilica.

Terrass Hotel, 12-14 rue Joseph-de-Maistre, 75018 (00 33 1 46 067 285; terrass-hotel.com ). Doubles from €150, room only.
