Romaneira, Portugal

This stunning retreat is designed for maximum visual drama as well as epicurean appeal. With 13 rooms and six apartments set among two big houses, the accommodation sits among terraced vineyards in the Douro Valley, 90 minutes' drive inland from Porto. The views are dreamy, the décor is a mix of antiques and contemporary cool, and the facilities range from gourmet restaurant to infinity pool, river-boat rides and hammam.

Can Bonastre, Spain

This self-styled wine resort lies at the foot of the Montserrat mountains, 35 minutes' drive from Barcelona. Accommodation at the 12-bedroom country house is contemporary chic with a nod to rustic life. The complex offers a spa with wine treatments, cocoa therapy and more; an indoor pool; and a gourmet restaurant. Activities range from bike rides around the vineyard to wine-tasting and helicopter flights.

Tenuta Poggio al Casone, Italy

This family-owned organic vineyard has 10 beautiful self-catering apartments. Guests share a pool and can borrow mountain bikes, go hiking or fishing and take wine tours.

Chateau L'Hospitalet, France

Château l'Hospitalet lies in a protected area where orchids, thyme and rosemary grow. Within the complex is a large cave showcasing winemaker Gérard Bertrand's range and a 38-bedroom hotel overlooking the vines and offering a restaurant, bikes to borrow and guided moorland walks.

Loisium wine and spa resort, Austria

This state-of-the-art wine centre and hotel is set on the edge of the picturesque town of Langenlois, about an hour's drive from Vienna. It looks on to newly planted vineyards, its architecture reflecting the geometry of 900-year-old wine vaults on which it was built. The 82-bedroom hotel here has a chic glass and steel ground floor with a spectacular pool alongside. It also offers a vinotherapy spa.
