Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

When Alpbachtal and Wildschönau joined forces to form Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau in 2012, it created one of the most appealing ski areas in the Austrian Tirol. Not only are there 109km of slopes to explore – for every level of skier – but you can also stay in some of Austria’s prettiest villages.

If you base yourself in delightful Alpbach, you’ll be surrounded by exquisite Tirolean charm as well as wonderfully varied pistes coming from the nearby hamlet of Inneralpbach.

On the Wildschönau side of the ski area, there’s the equally picturesque village of Oberau, along with Niederau and Auffach.

Easily accessible

Wherever you choose to stay, you’ll find friendly, cosy resorts that are perfect for families. Children have their own dedicated areas so they can learn to ski in safety, and they are all just a 45-minute drive from Innsbruck Airport.

If you’re travelling from Munich, it’s only 90 minutes. In these days of rising prices, it’s heartening to know that Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau offers excellent value for money – everything from lift passes and ski schools to wallet-friendly restaurants.

Take advantage of the guest card given to all visitors – either the Alpbachtal Seenland Card or the Wildschönau Card, depending on where you stay. They both offer not just free ski buses and village activities but also discounts in shops and restaurants. Discover another side of the ski area by joining one of the free guided snowshoe walks that come with the guest card.

Exhilarating attractions

Once you’ve explored the wide range of runs, tried the night skiing at Reith and Oberau and had a go in the three snowparks, the fun doesn’t stop there. Take a ride on the exhilarating new Alpbachtaler Lauser-Sauser Alpine coaster, a mechanical luge that swoops and swirls over a kilometre of track and will get you hollering with excitement.

If you’re looking for something a little more unusual, sign up to become a co-pilot on a piste-basher that climbs up and down the slopes at Reith im Alpbachtal every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. And for something even more electrifying, soar above the valleys on a tandem paraglide flight and really fly like a bird.

But you don’t need wings to experience the breathtaking views during rejuvenating winter walks on the mountain and through the woods. There really is so much to discover in Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau – whether on skis, a snowboard, a toboggan or your own two feet.

With daily scheduled flights to Innsbruck from London Heathrow and London Gatwick, as well as services from Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool, it’s easy to discover the Austrian Tirol. For more details, see visittirol.co.uk and skijuwel.com/en
