Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The most popular sports videos of week as viewed on YouTube at 17:00 GMT, Wednesday April 7, include moments of heartbreak and exhilaration in men's and women's basketball, a football commentator seeing the funny side of his own mistake, and a comedian fronting Nike's new ad campaign.

1) Women NCAA Xavier vs Stanford - 547,154 total views
ESPN's recap of the crucial women's college basketball game between Stanford and Xavier in the NCAA Championship, playing for a place in the final four. With the game tied 53-53 and four seconds remaining, Stanford's guard Jeanette Pohlen pulled off a truly astonishing play. Receiving the ball in her team's own key, she ran the length of the court, flanking the Xavier team's challenges before driving in to lay up a potential matchwinner just as the buzzer sounded to end the game. But did she get the shot away in time?

2) Marek Malik Own Goal in NLA Playoffs - 440,586 total views
An unfortunate own goal in one of Switzerland's National League A playoff games between Genève-Servette HC and EV Zug, as experienced defenceman Malik passes across (or even to) his goalkeeper. The keeper, Stephan Tobias, was rounding the goalmouth from the other side and the puck ricocheted into the net off his extended foot.

3) North Carolina TarHeels vs Rhode Island Rams - 384,112 total views
What appears to be an inadvertent but penalizable foul on Rams forward Lamonte Ulmer goes unpunished during the dying seconds of the game, meaning that the Tarheels clinched the best-of-seven playoff that night, winning by a single point, and going through to the National Invitational Tournament final. Had the foul been called, the result of the game and the series could have been very different.

4) Chris Kamara misses sending off at Portsmouth - 829,013 total views
Hijinks in Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday newsroom as Jeff Stelling, the show's host, cuts to the personable ex-footballer and match analyst during a match between Portsmouth and Blackburn on April 3. Kamara missed a key moment in Portsmouth's struggle to fend off relegation as long as possible, thinking that Anthony Van Borre was leaving the pitch as part of a planned substitution, which led to much laughter shared amongst the news team and indeed YouTube viewers.

5) Stanford beats Xavier to go to 2010 final four - 288,885 total views
A second replay of the final moments in the Stanford vs Xavier matchup during the Women's NCAA Championship, but this time of slightly lower audio and visual quality.

6) Denard Span Hits Mom With Foul Ball - 245,630 total views
Denard Span of the Minnesota Twins baseball team hits a foul ball on purpose during a game against the New York Yankees on March 31, clipping it neatly outside the diamond and towards the bleachers - or so he had intended. In a bizarre twist, it flew off towards the stands and bopped a mother. In fact, it was actually his own mom who was watching the game in a special friends and family area of the stands. She recovered quickly and watched the rest of the match from a shaded area.

7) URI vs UNC - Rhode Island get screwed - 200,026 total views
Slow motion replays of the back-court fumble that led to University of Rhode Island forward Lamonte Ulmer getting tripped up during the last few seconds of their semifinal playoff against the University of North Carolina. The foul wasn't awarded - so was he pushed or did he fall?

8) David Haye vs John Ruiz - Part 1 of 4 - 427,611 total views
A home recording of the first three of nine rounds in Haye's WBA heavyweight title defence on Saturday April 3 in Manchester. Haye floors Ruiz twice in the first round, though once with an illegal punch to the back of the head and Ruiz is clearly rocked, pushed back against the ropes on several occasions, though the ex-champ perks up at the start of the third.

9) The Secret Behind Nike Air - 232,096 total views
A promotional skit for Nike, fronted by popular comedian David Koechner (Anchorman, American Dad), explains where the air in Nike Air shoes comes from. The retired track and field star Carl Lewis monitors the quality of air harvested from top athletes: American footballer Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers, two-time 400m Olympic gold medal winner Sanya Richards, basketball player Brandon Roy of the Portland Trail Blazers, current women's marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe, former world tennis no.1 Maria Sharapova, and pro skateboarder Paul Rodriguez Jr. John McEnroe pops up at the end to offer his breath for less lofty purposes.

10) Flip Murray's Ridiculous Shot That Didn't Count - 159,257 total views
Ronald Murray of the Chicago Bulls hurls an almost unbelievable shot from inside his team's own half right on the buzzer at the end of the 3rd quarter against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday March 30. Incredibly, the shot went in touching nothing but net, though it didn't count as the clock struck zero before the ball left his hand.
