From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

There are a lot of “Arrr’s” and “Yarrr me hearties” tweets spreading around the microblogs on the morning of September 19 in honor of the International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

“To err is human. To arr is pirate! Happy International Talk Like a Pirate Day, me hearties. http://ow.ly/6rsKD #ITLAPD” post microbloggers who are participating in the event.

Twitter is also filling with tweets from perplexed Netflix users after the CEO of DVD rental and movie streaming company Netflix apologized to its customers and announced the company would rebrand its DVD by mail service “Qwikster.”

Twitter users are reacting to the news, tweeting “If Netflix and Qwikster were independent companies equally successful at what they do, one of them would buy the other & merge the brands,” “This Netflix/Qwikster thing is really stupid - not just the name. It's not about customers. It's about the stock market” and “My favorite part about @netflix's awful decision to split brands: the handle @qwikster is already taken, and he's an unabashed stoner.”

American actor “Jim Parsons” has won the Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy for his role in the TV series The Big Bang Theory.

The top four places in Twitter’s most talked about topics are taken by the hashtags “#SheenRoast,” “#ThingsThatGetMeUpset,” “#ReasonsWeCantBeTogether” and “#ReplaceTheMovieTitleWithSwag.”
