Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.According to this week's top 10 YouTube gaming videos, comedy spoofs rule the roost in video game land thanks to high rates of viewing of a StarCraft parody and Valve's humorous excuse for giving away the full Portal game on Mac and PC.
Most popular is a short playthrough video assembled by animator and English teacher Owen Dennis which purports to be the first version of the now-classic space strategy game StarCraft, here imagined as a launch title for 1982's ColecoVision console (the game's actual release date was March 1998, for Windows PCs, with Mac and N64 ports to follow). The game's sequel, StarCraft II, is due out on July 27, 2010.
Valve Software also chose the medium of satire to explain their decision to release their acclaimed action puzzle game Portal as a free download until May 24, claiming that the giveaway was funded by Portal's fictional Aperture Science corporation. It also helps promote Valve's Steam Network which has just been made compatible with Apple Macs, and teases an upcoming Portal 2 co-operative mode beta test.
Elsewhere, vlogger LikeTotallyAwesome comments on another supposed leak of the next iPhone model, the 4G, and there are trailers for Splinter Cell on iPhone/iPod Touch, Bad Company 2's extra multiplayer mode, and a new island in the children's MMO, Poptropica.
