From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

How bad is your obsession with social media?

Is checking Twitter the first thing you do when you open your eyes, and the last thing you do before you go to sleep at night?

Have you posted hundreds of pictures of your meals, and drinks, pets and loved ones?

Well, fear not, your commitment to the microblogging site pales in comparison to that of a mother who appears to have named her new baby 'Hashtag'. Presumably in honour of Twitter.

A Facebook message, posted with a picture of a cute looking newborn baby, says simply: “Hashtag Jameson was born at 10 oclock last nite."

“She weys [sic] 8pounds and I luv her so much.”

The picture which was, ironically, uploaded to Twitter's rival network over the weekend, hasn't been verified, and it's not clear whether or not the name is genuine, or a joke, or simply a mistake by the person typing the message.

Some users of social media have also suggested it could be part of an elaborate marketing campaign.

The final explanation is, perhaps, the most bizarre of all: it could be genuine.

After all, last year a couple from Hod Hasharon, near Tel Aviv, named their child 'Like' after the famous Facebook button.

The couple have said they were looking for a name that was "modern and innovative".

So is newborn Hashtag Jameson the real McCoy?

Stranger things have happened... but not much.
