Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Droid X was announced on June 23, a day before the iPhone went on sale in the USA, Europe and Japan. Blogs are eager to compare the two devices in battle that largely embodies the ongoing rivalry between Google's Android platform and Apple's iOS platform.
For now, the majority of reviewers agree that the battle "comes down to personal preference," and only long-term use will reveal a true winner.
The first edition of the wildly popular Droid (otherwise known as the Milestone in Europe) was an instant favorite with smartphone lovers. It was the fastest-selling Android phone ever launched with 1.05 million units shipped during the 74 days after its initial launch (Apple sold 1 million first-generation iPhones during the first 74 days on the market).
The Droid X is following in the Droid's footsteps, destined to win a special place in the hearts of Android-lovers in the US (international availability is yet to be announced).
"It has been a great summer for smartphones with the HTC EVO and iPhone 4 launches, and the addition of the DROID X adds another strong option for our customers to consider," said Scott Anderson, senior director of merchandising at retailer Best Buy Mobile in a June 25 press release.
Inside you will find an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, a 1 GHz processor, Android 2.1 software (Android 2.2 and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 will be provided as an over-the-air software update in the next few months) and 8GB of memory.
The device Motorola is calling "a pocket-sized home theater" also comes with a 4.3 inch high-resolution WVGA 854x480 display, 720p HD video capture, full length video and movie downloads, streaming video, Swype and preloaded apps and games like EA Need for Speed Shift, NFL Mobile, and Skype.
Additional apps can be downloaded from the more than 65,000 available on Google's Android Market.
Droidx.net, a blog dedicated to the handset has provided a hands-on guide that shows you how to dissect the phone and helps you discover what's inside. http://droidx.net/droid-x-news/droid-x-dissected/
The device became available for pre-order in the USA on June 25. It will go on sale on July 15 for $199.99 on a two-year contract.
