Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Steambirds, a top-down flight game for Android handsets, has taken the Grand Prize in the IndiePub Mobile Games Competition. Joining it on the podium are category winners up PLEXXR and SKWER (both for iOS devices) as well as Hero Mages and Spark It Up (for Android).

With shades of mobile hit Flight Control about its approach to aerial dogfights, Steambirds took the competition's top honors for its excellence in presentation and gameplay.

It was the Android version that won, though it's also available on iPhone and iPad, and there are free versions on the game's website and at portals such as Armor Games and Kongregate.

"Every aspect of the game is commendable," summarised the judges' panel. Stablemate Heights was runner up in the Audio category, won by Spark It Up's musical fireworks.

Role playing game Hero Mages, also available as a free online game, took the Technical Excellence award, and PLEXXR won in Art with a style that "subtly and expertly guides the player".

The IndiePub game development project has been involved in running competitions at GDC Online and March 2011's upcoming South by SouthWest Screenburn track.
